But Android phones are powerful, look better every day and are unparalleled in their connection to the cloud. So I won’t keep nagging you about the iPhone–I’ll just tell you which Android phone I’d get if someone put a gun to my head. A new best Android phone comes out every few weeks, but there’s an especially important handset coming out shortly–the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. This is the one I’d get when it comes out in a few weeks, even if it hasn’t been fully reviewed yet.
The Nexus phones are the series of phones that Google collaborates with an outside company with. It is as close to an official reference design as you can get for an Android phone. And even though it will be shortly eclipsed by other models in specs, and even though the iPhone is still an overall better experience, the important thing about the Nexus is that is always launches with the latest operating system and it also doesn’t have any superfluous software on it from the manufacturer or carrier to slow it down. The Nexus is a pure form of Android, and that is a good, good thing.
It’ll be the first to run Ice Cream Sandwich, the fourth generation of Android software. That gives it a more polished interface, where swiping is a major part of the control scheme. Having said that, the new changes aren’t stunning: It has a new browser that can handle 16 tabs at once. It has a new system font. It has a neato app switcher/closer. It has better voice recognition, although it still won’t keep up with the AI in the iPhone’s Siri. It’ll do something called Android Beam, which lets two owners with Beam bump phones to transfer files and contacts. (It does this using its support for Near Field Communication, a new standard of radio comm, so don’t expect to find many people who can use this functionality.) The Galaxy Nexus, using Ice Cream Sandwich, will be able to unlock itself using facial recognition.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus has a big 4.65-inch screen which is 1280×720 pixels in resolution, although some theorize it won’t look as good as the iPhone’s screen. And even though that screen is way big for a phone, since this phone dispenses with the buttons on its face, it isn’t much bigger than other Android handsets from the last generation with smaller screens. It has a barometer, but there’s not much you can do with a barometer.
The Nexus has a few competitors–specifically the Motorola Droid RAZR that came out a week before. The RAZR is a serious piece of hardware. It’s splash resistant-ish. Is about 2mm thinner (9 vs 7mm). It has bluetooth 4.0, a low power variant that is part of a new spec. It has a kevlar back. It has expandable memory. It has a few more megapixels, but who knows what that means for image quality.
No big deal. The bottom line is that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus this is an Android phone with the latest operating system and with no extra junk loaded on it.
