Introducing the Topo Designs Daypack Backpack from Topo Designs.

From the back, it looks like something you’d find on the backs of Yvon Chouinard and Douglas Tompkins during their first treks through Patagonia in the 1970s, but from the front, the padded, technical shoulder straps give it the appearance of a modern outdoors backpack.

There’s a computer sleeve inside, too.
It’s these straps that set Topo’s packs apart from the rest of the vintage-styled packs. After all, a lot has happened to improve ergonomics over the past four decades and it’s silly not to take advantage of this. They do a great job of distributing loads evenly across the shoulders while the mesh padding helps to keep things cool. One of the few complaints I have about the Daypack is that they don’t extend this padding to the backpanel. It would’ve definitely helped avoid back sweat when biking.

Other nice touches include leather utility loop patches, which are good for clipping bike lights or keychains too. Or you can add the optional webbing straps for when you want to attach a skateboard or unneeded coat onto the back without monopolizing the 22.4-liter main compartment. While that’s plenty for most day-to-day essentials, it can get a bit cramped on longer trips. It’s also not the best for grocery trips (I find that rolltop bags are easier to pack and seal back up when it comes to fitting lots of items into a small space).

The Daypack will fit up to a 15″ laptop in a slightly padded sleeve contained in the main pocket, but it only goes halfway up the computer so you’d probably want to get a separate sleeve as well to protect from scratches and nicks. The bottom could use a bit more padding, too. There’s a large zippered pouch and organizer on the front of the sleeve that’s good for pens and accessories. There’s also a zippered front pocket that’s quite deep, but unfortunately lacking in any type of internal organization features.

Zippers are burly and plastic so they won’t scratch or snag valuable electronics or clothing. In fact the whole thing is pretty burly and is covered by a lifetime warranty.

Which isn’t so bad considering it’s made in a LEED-certified factory in the heart of Colorado. If you want a vintage-looking bag with modern performance, then the Topo Designs Daypack is a great choice.
